Lirim Zendeli secured Charouz Racing System’s first F4 silverware after winning the ADAC Formula 4 drivers’ championship at the Nürburgring on Sunday (5 August).

Zendeli took a lights-to-flag victory in the first race at the legendary German circuit, with P2 and P5 finishes in races two and three enough to take the drivers’ title with a round to spare.

His success in the opening encounter gave him his eighth win of the season and an unassailable 79-point lead over second-placed Enzo Fittipaldi with just 75 points still available.

The 18-year-old was ecstatic at winning the title at his home event.

He said: “It’s amazing! Of course, my goal was to go out and win the title in my third year in Formula 4, but to have done it here in my home race and during the penultimate weekend is just mega. I can now go out and really enjoy the races at Hockenheim.”

Lirim’s success comes in his first year at Charouz, which has partnered with Ralf Schumacher and Gerhard Ungar’s US Racing squad to form US Racing CHRS, and he dominated the championship. Along with eight wins, the former karting champion also secured three podiums and eight pole positions.

Ungar said he was delighted with how quickly the German had settled into the team.

“We’re very pleased, very happy indeed. There’s a lot of pressure on you in your third year, and you have to be able to deal with it, so it’s definitely well deserved. It’s also nice for us as a team to have produced the drivers’ champion,” he added.

Lirim’s final race of the year will be at Hockenheim on 21-23 September.
