Introduced by the FIA in 2014, Formula 4 is designed to allow young kart racers the perfect way to experience driving a fully-fledged racing car within a reasonable budget.
The regulations allow for any manufacturer to build a car to F4 regulations as long as the cost falls within a strict budget gap. There are currently four FIA-approved companies building chassis: Tatuus, Mygale, Onroak & Dome. Engines are limited to 160 hp and are also subject to a price cap.
Engine manufacturers can build their own engines, with Honda, Ford, Toyota, Abarth and Renault all providing engines to various F4 championships.
Because the F4 category is affordable, championships have been launched across the world with series in the USA, Mexico, Britain, Italy, Germany, China, South East Asia and Australia. All running to the same specifications, young racers can use F4 to prepare themselves for the next step up the single-seater ladder.
